The popularity of charter schools in recent years has made charter school wait lists quite long in many areas of the country. No sooner does a new charter school open then they have a list of waiting applicants to go through. Finding quality education for children is a priority for many parents and, these days, charter schools are an appealing option over failing public schools.
Charter school wait lists are set up after all of the open enrollment spots are filled. Preference students, such as siblings of already enrolled students, are taken from that wait list and added to the open spots. After this is done, then a public lottery is held in the spring of the year to fill the remaining openings or openings that have come up during the year due to students moving or other similar situations. Some charter school wait lists are manageable while others take so much time that pursuing other options is a good idea for a backup plan.
