Waiting for Superman in the Fight for Charter Schools

In many regions of the country parents and legislators are fighting for charter schools on a number of levels. A popular documentary, Waiting for Superman, is being aired in many states. The film accurately documents how student performance rather than tenured teachers and union demands are what matters in education.

It isn’t surprising that teachers unions are fighting back.

Waiting for Superman is an attack on public education. It’s an attack on teachers, and it’s an attack on school units. We don’t need to wait for Superman. You walk into any public school and you see superheroes every day.” (David Hecker, president of the American Federation of Teachers Michigan)

Those fighting for charter schools in Detroit are quick to point that Detroit Public Schools have the worst public education results in the nation, with only 25% of its students ever graduating. Charter schools tend to be a cooperative effort between teachers, student and parents. As a result their stand for charter education is solid.
