New York City charter schools, like all charter schools in New York State, are publicly funded by tax dollars. Because of this public funding, you have a choice to enroll your child in a charter school in the city as an alternative to the traditional public school in your district.
Some General Information
The following may be helpful regarding enrollment in a charter school:
• Any child who meets eligibility requirements for a district public school can be admitted to a public charter school.
• Your child can’t be denied admission to a charter school due to race, gender, national origin, religion, intellectual ability or a disability.
• When the number of applicants exceeds the available seats in a school, a lottery or random selection process must be used.
• Siblings of students already enrolled in a charter school will be given preference. Students who live in the charter school’s community school district will also be given preference in admission.
Enrolling Your Child
If you are going to enroll in a charter school, you will need to apply for admission to the school. As each school may have a different admission process; it’s best to contact the school directly. Get information about each school's application/enrollment process and timeframes.
