Putting the Community in Charter Schools

A quick web search reveals how many schools go by the name "community charter school." For most, that isn’t just a nice sounding tag line. Charter schools are marked by intentional partnerships between administrators, teachers, students, parents and the local community. Many work in affiliation with community and state colleges and are aided by mentors from the local business community.

One such example is Community Charter School in the greater Philadelphia, PA area. The school was opened in Chester, PA in 1998 and now enrolls over 2,600 students with hundreds more on their waiting list. Every year student’s PSSA scores are among the highest in the Philadelphia area. The schools CEO, Steven E. Lee, believes the school’s success can be attributed to its sense of community among parents, students, staff and administration.

Charter Schools are a partnership of:

  • Founders
  • Administrators
  • Teachers
  • Students
  • Parents
  • The community
  • Businesses
