Advanced Charter School Education at Sci Academy
Some advocates would say a phrase like "charter schools advanced education" is redundant. A good example of the advanced track some charter schools are taking can be found in school districts where, until recently, “advanced” would not have been a word used to describe teachers or students.
One such example is the New Orleans Charter Science and Math Academy otherwise known as Sci Academy. Some of the aspects of advanced education at Sci Academy include:
- Positive reinforcement
- Concentrated focus on college and how to prepare for interviews
- Disciplined learning
- Focus on English, math and science
In 2010, 80% of the student population passed the English Graduate Exit Exam as opposed to less than 20% at neighboring Cohen and John McDonogh High schools. The passing rate in math was almost 90%.
All of this has been achieved in a school where 90% of the 10th and 11th graders qualify for free or reduced-price lunches.
