Charter Schools See the Real World as the Best Teacher

Twenty years ago California, along with nine other states, pioneered the way for the modern charter school movement. Now, with 800 public charter schools and 350,000 students, the state is also home to a new kind of charter school. Part of that success can be found in many of these schools discovering the real world is often the optimal learning environment for students.

The Center for Ecoliteracy in California has provided information and support in the establishment of 20 green charter schools. The optimal learning environment for these charters is nature itself. They are founded on four guiding principles:

  • Nature can be our teacher
  • Sustainability is accomplished through community
  • The real world provides is the optimal learning environment
  • A deep knowledge of place is the foundation for sustainable living
