Applying to a Charter School in New York City

Charter schools in NYC are at their highest demand ever. There were almost 40 thousand applications in 2008 with only 8,500 openings. Polls show that 67% of voters in New York City approve of charter schools and believe more are needed.

Applicants for charter schools in New York are not required to test for entrance and are allowed to apply to multiple schools simultaneously. A random lottery is held each spring to choose the one in ten applicants accepted annually. Each school then notifies students who are chosen of their acceptance. If not selected, a student can then ask to be placed on a charter school’s wait list for the next lottery.

The New York City Charter School Center has an online interactive map by which students and their guardians can identify to which charter schools they want to apply. Applicants are advised to include their Community School District (CSD) in their search.
