Admission Rates to Charter Schools

Charter schools have become so successful that the wait lists for most of them are almost always full. Admission rates to charter schools vary, depending upon each individual school. These days, it is not uncommon to be on a waiting list for months and sometimes years.

In New York City the chances of admission to an NYC charter school have gone down from 36% in the 2006-2007 school year to 28% in the 2009-2010. At the same time, since 2007, applications to charter schools in the area have increased by 50%. Just these statistics alone show the popularity of charter schools yet the dilemma they are facing as well. It is this facts like these that have several states considering legislation that will allow for the building of more charter schools.

Because of their ability to offer students a more specialized and flexible environment, charter schools will likely continue to grow in popularity as more and more public schools are failing to meet student needs.
