State and Federal Funding for Charter Schools

State and federal funding for charter schools mandates that these schools are public schools and cannot charge tuition for students to attend. Charter schools do govern themselves in that the local school board is not the overseeing body of the charter school.

The name "charter school" means that they are free from the public school organization and can set up their own charter. However, due to the state and federal funding for charter schools, they cannot teach specific religions like private religious schools can.

Typically charter schools seek out funding above and beyond the state and federal funding that is provided, for charter schools often get up to 60% less in funding than their public school counterparts. This is the biggest reason why many charter schools are found in existing public buildings such as unused school facilities, library spaces and the like.
