Two Factors that Makes Charter Schools Successful

Charter schools are not private schools. Instead, they are public schools allowed to operate independently as an experimental alternative to traditional public schools. Because of this, they can approach education in innovative ways, including alternative curriculum, teaching methods and parent-teacher interaction.

The most successful charter schools are typically located in urban areas where traditional public schools are failing to provide and adequate education. They operate on a longer schedule than traditional public schools with both longer school days and school years for students.

Independence does not mean lack of accountability. In fact, charter schools operate knowing their charter only exists for three to five years and renewal is far from guaranteed. If a charter school fails to meet prescribed standards, its charter can be revoked or not renewed. It is this combination of flexibility and accountability that has made so many charter schools successful.
