Longer Hours or Better Teachers

The top two ranked countries in the world in secondary education are China and Finland. While a number of charter schools in America have adopted China’s model of longer hours, many are also looking to Finland as an example. The result is better teachers in charter schools than in many traditional schools.

Finland’s success is mainly due to its emphasis on quality teachers who are products of quality education themselves. Most traditional school districts have a factory model of education. Teachers are given a prefabricated product and expect to turn out quality students on a consistent basis.

Charter schools often have better teachers because:

  1. They are allowed to shop for a school just like students of charter schools are.
  2. They are encouraged to be innovative and become risk takers.
  3. They are rewarded for excellence and academic results in their students.
