Over One Million Students Now in Charter Schools

In the United States, charter schools range from K-12 and receive public funds. What makes them unique is how they are intentionally freed from the rules and regulations of traditional schools. That freedom is directly attached to expected criteria of results set forth in each schools individual charter.

While they are an alternative, they are still considered part of the public school system and cannot charge tuition. Because space is often limited in such schools, a lottery system is often used to determine which students will be admitted each year. A number of charter schools specialize with math and science is the most common emphasis. There are also schools whose charter involves the arts and even agriculture.

Since its inception in 1991, the charter school movement has grown dramatically. 40 states now have charter schools that educate over one million students.
