Teaching “Digital Natives”

One reason charter schools are effective is because they tend to employ alternative learning techniques more readily than traditional schools. Anyone born in the last 15 years has spent their entire life learning in a different way than generation before them. As a result, alternative techniques are necessary for them to learn.

Some educators refer to these students as “Digital Natives,” meaning they have been raised in the language of computers, video games and the Internet. They are accustomed to receiving information quickly and tend to multi-task. These students think graphically first and textually second. Digital natives are accustomed to instant gratification accompanied by rewards.

Because these students think and speak differently than previous generations, they tend to feel disconnected from school and generally see no purpose in it. Through alternative learning techniques charter school tend to bridge the gap between generations better than traditional schools.
